It's all Greek to me

Friday, July 31, 2015

The end of July means that our summers are coming to a close soon and it's nearly time to pack our moving boxes again and get settled into our dorm rooms once more. Fall means new classes, new textbooks, and a new slate. You know what else fall means? Recruitment.

While I will be the first to shout from the rooftops that I always knew Greek life was for me, I'm here to talk to those of you who may be on the fence- or even those of you who have no idea what being Greek even means. If you give me just a moment of your time, I think I may be able to persuade you, if not give you a new take on Greek life.

When you think Greek, what do you think? Are you thinking girls in baggy tee's with nike shorts, letters stickered to cars, and copious amounts of time spent sipping Starbucks? While this does happen, and I've even partaken in all of these things, this is just a small fraction of what Greek life really is. Being Greek is really more than letters. Being Greek is life-changing. Not just your life, but the lives of others.

Being Greek is volunteering in your community, lending a helping hand, or even just sending some words of encouragement. Being Greek is never being alone. It's having a friend to go to for advice, being somebody else's cheerleader, and being apart of a community. Being Greek is redefining yourself. I went into my chapter as a shy freshman, unable to really strike conversations with anyone who I hadn't known for my entire life. A year later I'm bold enough to introduce myself to and start conversations with other Greeks, people I sit by in class, and *gasp* even professors (and they can be the scariest of them all). Being a Greek is being a leader. Never in my life did I think I would want to be a spearhead of anything, but here I am as a college sophomore having just completed the duties of my chapter position and diving head first into acting as Rho Gamma for my university's Panhellenic recruitment.

If you've ever wanted to belong to a strong community, help others, or lead, being Greek might be the thing for you. Do you want my advice? Talk to a Rho Gamma, go to your college's info night for recruitment, ask questions. Whatever route you take, don't just dismiss Greek life. If you don't think it's for you, do you really know for certain that it's not? What is the worst thing that could come from talking to someone about joining Greek life? The way I see it, you'll either re-affirm what you think, or you'll have a completely different view on it and actually take the plunge to sign up for recruitment.

Now, here's my challenge to you: think about Greek life. Think about it while you're stuck in traffic, while you're getting your nails done, while you're singing in the shower. Just think about it. Toss the idea around a few times in your head. Picture it. See if you can imagine yourself a leader, a sister, a voice for change. When you have that image, when you catch a glimpse of it, watch this video:

Give the thought of Greek life 3 minutes. Who knows, in 180 seconds you could be ready to change your life.

Kayak / Okay so I've been really getting into the water sports lately. Between sailing with my dad and taking our kayak out,  I've been soaking up the sun and salty air like no other.

Sailing / My dad and I recently joined a sailing club and going out on Thursday nights to sail makes the week so much better! I absolutely cannot wait to go again this week!

Pico / The other night my mom made homemade pico de gallo and it was incredible! Everything tastes so fresh and despite wanting to savor it and make it last longer, I cannot help but find myself gravitating towards it when I'm in need of a mid-day snack.

Tan / My skin does not tan, it just burns. Today I actually might have achieved a much sought after tan though! Now don't get me wrong, I always lather up with some SPF before hitting the great outdoors, but who doesn't want to achieve a tan the natural way. I believe tans are earned through hikes, sails, kayaks, walks, swims, and runs throughout the summer, not bought. But maybe that's just me...

Planning / Can we just take a hot sec to talk about how hard it is to make plans with your fav people when everyone works different shifts? Yeah... adult-ing sucks...

Vlogs / I am completely obsessed with watching vloggers on youtube! Does anybody have a favorite vlogger they like to keep up with?

Hope you don't have a case of the Monday blues!

Summer Fitness Wishlist

Since I have recently been making a switch to a more active lifestyle, I have been living in fitness clothing. I love how active wear has become fashion forward, and I've been recently been slowly building my collection of workout wear. If I had endless amounts of money, here's what I would be buying to sweat in. Shop this post below!

36(ish) Hours at Universal Studios

Wednesday, July 22, 2015

Before making our way to my grandparents, we spent a couple nights at Universal's Cabana Bay Beach Resort. It had the most picture-esque backdrops!

Upon arriving in Hogsmeade, the castle towered above the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Showing my Rho Gamma love in front of Hogwarts' castle! Too bad the sun is too bright to see my throw...

Having early access to the Wizarding World gave us the opportunity to finally go into Ollivanders and Lee was chosen to have a wand specially picked for her.

Before getting on the train to "London" we walked around Hogsmeade a bit more.

The Hogwarts Express was way cool. The special effects they used made it actually seem you were in magical presence.

I was in awe of how amazing Diagon Alley had turned out. The Gringotts ride was beyond thrilling and definitely became one of my favorites.

The attention to detail throughout Diagon Alley was impressive. Everything from the layout of the street, the buildings, and the signs felt authentically Harry Potter.

Gringotts was quite the experience, completed with goblins and all.

The chandeliers in this place were breath-taking. There were about 4 or 5 of these if I remember correctly, all equally beautiful.

A trip to the Wizarding World calls for some Butterbeer. I probably drank three of these a day. #sorrynotsorry

Even the entry way to the Alley was perfect. "Wayfaring Wizards Welcomed."

Outside Diagon Alley was a London layout, and LeeAnn had so much fun being the diva she is inside the telephone booths.

My family is obsessed with Despicable Me and the minions, so a visit to the minion ride was a must as well!

Honestly, such a silly ride.

Couldn't leave without getting a picture with a minion!

Lee loved the truffula trees in Seuss Landing and spent forever posing with them all.

I figured that since I am having some complete Florida withdrawals that now would be prime time to recap my (not so) recent trip to Universal Studios from June!

Have you been there? What's your favorite part? (Mine's obviously the Wizarding World)

"an iced latte a day keeps the doctor away..."

Eastern Market / One of my absolute favorite things to do in the summer is head over to Easter Market with my mom. This summer free Saturdays have been hard to come by, so this was my first outing there and it did not disappoint! I'm doing an EM over view on my blog this week so you can see my favorite things to do while I'm there!

Week 4 / I am starting week 4 of Kayla Istines BBG and I am already seeing huge improvements! Not so much physically as mentally, but it is so impressive. My burpees are so much better, my push ups have improved, and I find myself so energetic the rest of the day after I get one of Kayla's workouts done. I'm not in it so much for the physical changes as I am just because I simply love a good challenge, but it's a nice bonus!

Heating Up / It has been so hot here lately! Work has been like being in a furnace because of all the heat that gets trapped in and you cannot go outside without immediately working up a sweat. Michigan hasn't gotten much of a summer yet, so this heat has an impact.

Gallery Wall / In preparation of moving into a new dorm room, I have been working on crafting the perfect gallery wall. The elements are coming together nicely and I cannot wait to show off my hard work to you all soon!

Defining my style / I've noticed that my style is evolving once again. It's so strange and I can't really put in what you would define it as. I still love classic, traditionally "preppy" pieces because I believe they are so versatile, but I've also been really gravitating to the laid back boho-esque styles that I have been seeing everywhere as of late. I would say that I have definitely become a blend of the two.

Shutterfly / I recently made a shutterfly scrapbook of my sorority's past year and I am so impressed with it's result! I highly recommend this company to anyone who has ever wanted to turn their photos into a sleek and streamlined look, but also wants their book to have some personality. It was so easy and fun and I will definitely be returning to the company in the future. Plus, they always have some great deals!

Wishing you a productive week!

Old Favorites

shirt / shorts / sandals / bag (this season's version) / sunglasses

Sometimes summertime fashion just comes down to straight comfort. On extremely hot days like today, I gravitate to old favorites of mine. My grey slouchy tee is stretched out, worn, and thinning- so basically it's perfect. These neon pink chinos have been perfectly broken in over years of wear. Last year's Jacks are now perfect for leisurely strolls or taking in sights along the boardwalk. My bag is old. Like, really old. It's roomy enough for adventuring but still stylish enough to be out in public with. And my hair? This is my new go-to. Half fishtail, half regular braid. I do this when it's hot and I don't want to be bothered (get it, hot & bothered?). Bad jokes aside, this is a perfect casual summer outfit!

What hot weather wear do you gravitate to?

Birthdays / July is a birthday-heavy month in my family and so birthday cheer has been going round and round all month! This week we celebrate two! Happy birthday Lee & dad!

Planner / I have been using my Erin Condren planner like crazy to keep track of workouts, blog posts, and work. I am obsessed. I'm currently on the lookout for stickers and washi everywhere too. If you know any good etsy shops or other places to get adorable stickers, drop me a line!

Movies / I've seen two movies in the past week and I am in movie heaven! Inside Out is adorable and great to see with your whole family. If you're in the mood for some comedy, I recommend seeing Melissa McCarthy in Spy. It was one of the funniest movies I have seen in a while and it is perfect for a date night!

Yoga / I practice yoga pretty regularly for someone with a schedule as unpredictable as mine, but this past week I recently tried Bikram Yoga. It's essentially hot yoga and boy... It lives up to it's "hot" claim. 105* at a 40% humidity? No thank you! I am grateful for the experience though!

Arts & crafts / Dorm decorating is now in full swing for me and I am in a crafters heaven! I have already painted a few jars and wall decorations and I'm now moving onto my overall decorative theme. Would you all be interested in me sharing a little of my own inspo with all of you?

7-11 / No, not the Beyonce song- free slurpee day! Did any of you partake in the 7/11 day festivities? I sure did! I hit up two 7-11's and got my free drinks. Not a bad day, if I must say!

Question: what kind of posts do you all want to see? Let me know! I love creating content that you want to see!

Library Book Haul

Saturday, July 11, 2015

Today's post is just a quick little peak into what I'm currently reading. It's been asked before that I give book suggestions (my list here!), but I also thought that it would be fun for you to all see what I'm actually reading in conjuncture to my summer reading list.

I'm really excited to actually read Bridget Jone's Diary as I've seen all of the movies. I think they are gloriously witty movies, so I have amazing expectations for the book as well. Normally I would have read the novel first, but being so young when the movie came out, I feel it's only natural and expected that I wouldn't have ready the book just yet!

Ellen seriously cracks me up. She is, to this day, the only day-time TV show I will watch. My friend Annmarie has raved about this book, and it's been out forever so I figured it was high time that I get my hands on a copy for reading. I am sure that Ellen will be as clever in written language as she is in spoken language.

Admittedly, I have not always been the Amy Poehler fan that I am today. After falling in love with her on Parks & Rec, my admiration for her has grown tremendously and I've grown to really enjoy her sense of humor. I've already thumbed through this book a bit and the pictures are hilarious, so I can only imagine what the content will be like. I was so excited to see this at my library that I literally snatched the book off the shelf as if my life depended on it.

What book(s) are you currently reading?

Dairy-free Chunky Monkey

Friday, July 10, 2015

I love ice cream. Like... love. And my favorite ice cream? Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey. It is to die for and I can honestly say nothing compares to it. Unfortunately, Ben & Jerry's can be pricey.

For some reason, a lightbulb literally went off in my head and I was just like "wait a minute... I can make this myself". I love banana ice cream and I already knew how to make it, so adding a few simple extras completed the bowl giving me the perfect homemade Chunky Monkey - dairy free, might I dd!

Ingredients:
2 ripened bananas
1 tablespoon of dark chocolate chips
1/2 cup of walnuts

Directions:
In a blender, mix together your 2 ripened bananas. Put you mixture into a small tupperware container, add in your chocolate chips and walnuts, stir the mixture up, and pop it into the freezer. Let it chill for about 45mins-1 hour or until frosty (don't let it freeze completely or else it will turn into more of a sorbet-ice mixture than a creamy ice cream).  Scoop into a bowl (or eat it out of the container- I won't judge!) and that's it! Super easy and only 3 ingredients!

Have you ever made banana "ice cream"?

tank / shorts (on sale now!) / bag (similar)

This tank is making another appearance on my blog because it's honestly perfect. It's lightweight, pairs with nearly everything, and just looks great. These shorts have also been featured on the blog (this post, actually!). Bonus about these shorts? They're currently on sale! I own them in two colors and I highly suggest getting your hands on them, they're fabulous.

What are fashion favorites you own multiples of?

how gorgeous is this sail?

#DeathByKayla / It has now been one week since I started Kayla Itsines' BBG and wow... I have never worked out harder (or smarter) in my life. Leg day is the ultimate killer, and this week's legs + cardio routine was much harder than previous ones. I am still so thrilled about this journey. When I'm a little more along in the workouts I plan on making a whole post about them, but for now I'll just updated you in my MM's.

Coco / I love Ed Sheeran's cover of the song "I'm in love with the coco" and I have been playing it like crazy on and off the last couple of days. Listen to the song here!

breelovesvlogs / Hands down my favorite YouTube account ever. I have been a long time follower and viewer of Cambria's videos and she continues to inspire me daily. Her love and passion for an active lifestyle is touching, and she does it so seemingly effortlessly. Check out her channel here

Trap Queen / I've loved this song since I went to the stroll off during Greek week. Since I also happen to love whip videos, this makes this video perfect.

Sailing / My dad and I got the chance to take our sailboat out on the water for the first time yesterday and it was so much fun. Not too much wind and we drifted ashore on the beach a few times, but it was still a blast. Now we know not to forget to bring paddles. I cannot wait to go next time- hopefully there will be more of a breeze!

Trader / I've been in the mood for healthier snacks lately so I think tomorrow I will be taking a trip to my nearby Trader Joes. Gosh, I love that store. Would you all be interested in a grocery haul from there?

Happy Monday to all!

tank (sold out, but similar) / shorts / sandals

Winning these shorts from yepitsprep was one of the coolest things that's happened to me. Before I even got these shop konfetti shorts, I was in love. These bad boys made the journey down south and they were perfect for lazy strolls around town or for casual coffee dates. They're so lightweight that they became a summer fav of mine instantly and now I totally want more of them (I've got my eye on this pair & this pair)!

Have you ordered anything from shop konfetti?
